Social changes need many generations, as is well known.

To illustrate, here is a conversation that happened in Italy (some thirty years ago).

Italian:

"Don't talk to me about Pisans, they are unrefined peasants."

Foreigner:

"Why is that?"

Italian:

"There was a war, Pisa lost, its population was exterminated, and Pisa's current population are descendants of peasants from the surrounding villages."

Foreigner:

"Oh... And when was that?"

Italian:

"In the 14th century."
